Visby - A World Heritage
The great town wall of 3 400 meters is still standing in Visby, as well as about 200 buildings, monasteries, church ruins and a cathedral from Visby's grandest period.
Stone was often used during the Middle Ages when building, and the residents of Gotland have taken extra care to protect their buildings. The plague, during the 14th century, brought harder times to Gotland, changing the climate which resulted in piracy and reducing Visby's importance in trade.
