Drottningholm Palace in Stockholm has been a royal residence for hundreds
of years. It was built by the order of Queen Hedvig Eleonora, after the
old palace burnt down.
In 1991 Drottningholm was nominated to become the first Swedish location
to be placed on Unesco`s prestige-filled World Heritage List. It is the
well kept Chinese Pavilion, the Court Theatre, parks and environment from
the 1700`s that has contributed to it`s nomination.
Drottningholm Palace with its well kept environment is an endearing destination
for the inhabitants of Stockholm as well as for tourists.
The unique Baroque garden is typical for its period symmetrical and perfect.
It takes a lot of time to keep it in shape.
On the estate there are several buildings, the Court Theatre, the Palace
church, a tavern and a special shop with souvenirs.
The Royal Family has had their residence here since 1981, and the theatre
is the oldest in the world still in use, with a machinery and stage in original
condition.
