Baltzar
von Platen is probably the most significant man in the history of Motala.
He designed the unique city plan in shape of a fan, and was also responsible
for starting the building of The Göta Canal in 1810. By 1832 the whole
waterway from Gothenburg to Stockholm was navigable. Along the 190 kilometers
long Göta Canal there are 58 locks. It is one of the most popular tourist
attractions in Sweden and some 2 million people come here every year, to
enjoy the sights and activities along the waterway. Baltzar von Platen was
also the man behind the Motala workshop, which came to give the city a worldwide
reputation in technique.

The
town of Motala is beautifully situated on the eastern shore of lake Vättern
and offers possibilities for all kinds of activities. In the summer naturally
its watersports like bathing, fishing, sailing, diving and and much more.
Besides watersports the town also offers a wide choice of leisure activities.
In Vättern, Motala Stream och Göta Canal you can catch fishes
like perch, salmon trout, rainbow, pike and whitefish. You can also find
several other lakes in the area where you can try your fishingluck.
