The Naval Museum
Karlskrona Sweden
The Naval Museum in Karlskrona originated in the model collection
established at the naval dockyard in 1752.
The Naval Museum aims to give the visitor a comprehensive impression
of the Navy in history, and the Swedish naval heritage with its wealth
of traditions. Particularly interesting features include a reconstructed
gun deck from the end of the l8th century and the glassed-in underwater
passage that leads visitors down to the wreck of what is thought to be
the Göta Lejon, a passenger ship. Another attraction is the chance
to view with one´s own eyes work on the Hiorten, a fall-scale replica
of a post ship dating from 1692.
The exhibitions at the Museum depict the Swedish Navy over the centuries.
On display is everything from weapons, uniforms and shipyard handicrafts
to the Museum's unique collection of ship models and
figureheads
from the l7th and l8th centuries.
Beautiful paintings are on display
The auditorium, library, research rooms and other facilities offer scope
for activities other than the traditional work af a museum.
And the setting for it all is the living maritime history that characterises
Karlskrona and the waters surrounding it. The Naval Museum is just one
part of the vibrant museum formed by Karlskrona and it's archipelago as
a whole, in terms of naval history.

The new Naval Museum's maritime nature is emphasised by its location on
a long pier. Moored along the quays are the minesweeper Bremön, the
Spica torpedo boat, the T38 motor torpedo boat , the full-rigged training
ship Jarramas and other vessels.
The sloop and launch shed - itself a unique l8th-century building -
houses a boat collection and a boatbuilding workshop that is in constant
use to this day.
In its forthcoming activities, the Naval Museum will offer a programme
designed to appeal to visitors with a thirst for knowledge as well as those
seeking entertainment. This year's range includes a photographic exhibition
depicting life at the Karlskrona shipyard over the past 50 years, and also
an anniversary exhibition about Gladan and Falken, the Navy's training
schooners, which are 50 years old this year. Also on the programme for
1997 are activities of such widely differing kinds as music, sailing, handicrafts
and lectures.
