Karlshamn - culture quarters and beautiful nature
|
|
In
the "Kulturkvarteren" (Culture quarters) the Museum, housed
in the old tobacco barn, and the Swedish punsch factory,
shows local art and history.
Among the most famous buildings in the centre of the
city are the house where the famous writer of many of
Swedens most loved children's and family songs, Alice
Tegnér, was born and Harmska huset and Hotel
Hope that was mentioned in the emigrant epic written
by Vilhelm Moberg.

Karlshamn
was one of the really big meeting places for the emigrants
before they continued their long journey to America. In
the park by the harbour there is a monument "Karl-Oskar
and Kristina" by Axel Olsson, in honour of all the
emigrants that left Sweden here.
The citadel "Kastellet", on Frisholmen at the
harbour entrance of Karlshamn, is a popular destination
for an excursion in the summer, with regular boatrips.
It is built in granite in an anomalous hexagon and 400
men worked here until it was closed in 1865. Eriksberg
is one of Northern Europes largest national parks and
wildlife refuges. Red and fallow deer, elk, European bison
and many other wild animals roam freely here.

The
archipelago of Karlshamn has more than 250 islands, islets
and skerries. Tärnö is the largest one, and from its higest
point, Drakberget, (Dragon mountain) one can see more
than half of Blekinge´s coast.
The salmon fishing in Mörrumsån is a time-honoured
tradition and nowadays anglers come from all over the
world to fish. Another interesting place to visit is "Laxens
Hus" by the "Kungsforsen" - an establishment
which gives a fantastic insight into the life and existence
of the salmon.
