| Borgholm Castle is one of Swedens great historical monuments.
As one of the most important fortresses in the kingdom
it was the scene of battles and sieges, destruction an
rebuilding throughout the Middle Ages and into the 17th
century.
Swedes and foreigners alike have owned the fortress,
kings and princes have held court here, and peasants of
Öland have dragged thousands of cartloads of limestone
to build the walls and towers, until, after centuries
of changing fortunes, Borgholm was finally left to decay
in the 18th century.
Nowadays, current and permanent exhibitions can be seen
here.
