For many people Båstad is synonymous with tennis and sunny baths, but when the city got its town charter in the 15th century, its main income was earned from the favourable herring fishery. The herring led to that the city experienced a culmination in economy and in the number of inhabitants about one hundered years later.

Actually it was not until around 1900 that Båstad developed into a really popular seaside resort. Then many - often wealthy - visitors came to enjoy such "newfangledness" as sunbaths. As the century went on, recreational trips became a fad that spread across all social classes, and today Båstad is a real summers paradise that attracts people from all walks of life.

Another important factor in the popularity of the town are the picturesque streets with its splendid villas from the early 20th century.

Båstad Chamber Music Festival takes place in breathtaking surroundings with a view over the Laholm Bay. Top class musicians invite you for an exciting and varied mix of music from several centuries. About 17 concerts are held with some 100 artists in concert halls, churches and a castle. Classical and modern music, string quartets, piano trios and great soloists. Every year, the week after Midsummer!
