The
idyllic city of Ängelholm has much more to offer than toy ocarinas!
Even if that actually is what most people associate the city with,
it is the rich and varied landscape and the good fishing-waters
that attracted the first inhabitants to settle down here a long
time ago.
It was the Danish King Christian II who founded the city in 1516,
but a long way back in time before that, a medieval precursor,
Luntertun, was situated north west of where Ängelholm is today.
Christian II simply moved Luntertun to a more strategic location,
ordered the inhabitants to follow, and renamed it "Engelholm".
Unfortunately he changed his mind and soon moved the people to
another city. Some fishermen and farmers refused and stayed behind,
but found themselves living in a city without any town charter.
During the history, Ängelholm has been ravaged by wars, several
large fires and the plague, and the Swedes and the Danes have
fought over it. In 1767 it finally got its town charter back,
and could start to recover and expand.
In
middle of the 18th century a squadron of cavalry was placed in
Ängelholm, and the military tradition is still alive today.
As mentioned in the beginning, the most wellknown fact about the
city is the production of toy ocarinas.
But the abundant supply of clay has also contributed to the prominent
brick production that took off in the late 19th century, and that
provided an income for many citizens.
Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Ängelholm is blessed with a varm and
mild climate, so summertime it is a lovely place to visit if one
loves the sun and the salty waves. The are beaches for everyone;
children, dogs, nudists, the lazy and the active ones.
