The authentic Spanish fishing town of Conil de la Frontera has about
16,000 inhabitants. The surrounding area has a very diverse landscape,
with its coastline, old town features, undeveloped open countryside
with forests and scattered villages.
All in all 16 km of long sandy beaches stretch out nearby, which
are suitable for a variety of leisure activities. Long, flat beaches
with white sands, small sections of beach with cliffs behind them,
small coves for nude bathing and sunning yourself at Cala de Aceite
and behind the lighthouse.
Conil's
traditional economic activity is fishing, above all tuna and sole.
Its surroundings are rich in fruit and vegetables orchards. It is
one of the coastal villages with a greater tourist atmosphere. During
the summer, there are festivals every night, thus fostering the
multiple housing developments and campings it has in its surroundings.
Well worthwhile visits should include:- Museo de la Raices Conileñas,
Puerta de la Villa, Torre de Guzman and the different churches,
such as Santa Catalina.
There
are many lively bars and cafes, often with live performances, in
the Bateles neighbourhood. The dishes of Conil are among the tastiest
in the province and the local restaurants are busy until late, often
in historic buildings which have a special atmosphere in their central
patios.
In the numerous restaurants of this town you can taste delicious
seafood and daily fresh fish, a speciality which is served in the
majority of these restaurants.
The Conil area has a good choice of activities horse riding,
bike-rides, trekking and gliding. Water sports such as surfing,
windsurfing, sailing, scuba diving, fishing and canoeing, especially
in the coves.
