Figueres and The Dali Museum

Dali Museum FigueresSalvador Dali is undoubtedly one of Spain's most famous sons. He was born in the Northern Spanish town of Figueres on May 11, 1904, a few miles south of the border with France. His surreal art became one of the great symbols of the 20th century - art that set trends and enthralled millions. Today, Dali and his work is celebrated in a multitude of ways, from grand museums to performing arts all over the world.

But it is in Figueres - his birthplace - where Dali's magnificence may be truly appreciated. Figueres - Dali's Home Figueres is a small city situated close to the main Franco-Spanish motorway that services Southern France and the East Coast of Spain. It is less than an hour's drive from Barcelona and is literally minutes away from the French border. Hidden within the city's ancient heart of Medieval, Renaissance and neo-classical architecture stands the Dali-Theatre Museum - Figueres' top attraction.

The Dali-Theatre Museum was inaugurated in 1974. It holds more than 4000 pieces of Dali art, which range from the truly bizarre to the absolutely ridiculous! Every one though is a masterpiece in its own right. The collection includes paintings, drawings, holograms, engravings, photography and even jewelry. To be honest, walking through the museum is more like falling into a wormhole of space and time rather than entering a conventional museum.

There is the 'Shoe and the Glass of Milk' from 1932 and represented in mixed media format from 1975; the 'Soft Self-portrait with Fried Bacon' on canvas from 1941, and the 'Fifty abstract images in which we see, three metres away, three Lenins characterised as Chinamen and together forming a royal tiger's muzzle' from 1963. Getting to Figueres Figueres is easily accessible via the international airport at Barcelona. Alternatively, visitors can fly into Perpignan airport in Southern France, which is marginally closer to Figueres.
