Strøget
Your
shopping tour starts here.... Strøget runs right through the heart
of Copenhagen from Kgs. Nytorv to Rådhuspladsen and along
its length, the dopplered sound of street performers fill the air. The
stretch closest to Rådhuspladsen is mainly dedicated to young fashion
and further along, several of the major fashion chains like H&M and Esprit
as well as Company’s (Danish In Wear and Matinique) have their flagship
stores. Although you may be familiar with what they have to offer, they're
worth a visit purely for the decor and their wide selections.
It's at the Kgs. Nytorv end of Strøget the more exclusive fashion shops
begin to show; names like Prada, Kenzo, Mulberry, Chanel and Hermès stand
shoulder to shoulder offering the best in top-class international fashion
and design. Amagertorv has recently been repaved in a unifying
geometrical series of granite flagstones and a coffee break at the well
situated Café Europa and Café Norden offers a fine view over the bustling
square with its Stork Fountain to the red-brick renaissance building where
Royal Copenhagen and silversmith Georg Jensen resides.
In fact, this long pedestrian street could be considered as a series
of architectural gems, punctuated with just about every shop conceivable.
And in the unlikely event that you still haven't found what you want,
there's the option of the multi-floored emporiums of Illum and Magasin
(biggest in Scandinavia) to slake your shopping thirst.
