Liseberg The world's best wooden roller coaster is in Göteborg!
For the second time in three years, Balder has been voted the world’s best wooden roller coaster. Enthusiasts from around the world took part in the annual poll to rank every wooden roller coaster in the world. As the only wooden roller coaster to rank ahead of the experts’ favourite steel roller coaster, Balder is therefore considered the very best of the world’s 2,000 or so roller coasters.
The poll was conducted online and covered 175 wooden roller coasters around the world. The roller coasters were compared on the basis of whether the ride was better than, worse than or as good as other roller coasters. Consequently, each roller coaster was treated fairly despite the variations in passenger numbers. Experts in the field believe this to be the most reliable survey of its kind, and their comments can be read at .
Balder was followed in second place by Thunderhead in Dollywood, Tennessee, and in third place by Boulder Dash in Lake Compounce, Connecticut. In fifth place was Aska in Nara Dreamland, Japan, making it the best wooden roller coaster in Asia. The next European roller coaster, Colossos in Heide Park, Germany, did not appear until twelfth place.

The 581 enthusiasts who took part in the poll have travelled all over the world trying out roller coasters. On average, they have ridden more than 30 different wooden roller coasters during the year. They take at least three rides on each: one in the front part of the train, one in the middle, and one right at the back. The ride can differ slightly depending on your position in the train. The main variation is in “air time”, the periods when you feel you are rising from your seat. Balder has high air time and a very soft ride, which the experts praised.
